I have been delighted to work with Imran Kotwal and Muslim Learner Services for over three years now. I first booked sessions with him for Frodsham Manor House Primary School where he led a whole school assembly and worked with a further three classes during the day. Imran continues to work with us on an annual basis and the children have come to know him well and look forward to his visits to enhance our learning on Islam. He has also led workshops for Cheshire West Primary School pupil workshops which are always lively and engaging. He has led county CPD on the teaching of Islam and a session at our Agreed Syllabus launch on misconceptions. Once you meet Imran, you will want him to come to meet your pupils. I have always found Imran to be friendly, approachable, adaptable, reflective and open to any questions which you may have. I am confident that any session for pupils or staff will be an excellent use of your time and resources.
It was lovely to meet you today. I hope you had a safe journey back to Bolton.
The children and adults really enjoyed your assembly and workshops. We have all learned so much about Islam and the children were eager to know more. You had such a lovely manner with them and had them all engaged.
Middleton In Teesdale Primary School, Co. Durham
Dear Imran, It was a pleasure meeting you as well!
Having you come to teach our children was such a privilege. Your manner was lovely and they responded positively to you. Overall I would say the opportunity for them to touch, hold and use artefacts really engaged them. It was an experience that I believe our children need every year and will be a new Nicholas Hawksmoor tradition.
Dan Cox, Assistant Headteacher, Nicholas Hawksmoor Primary School, Northamptonshire
Thank-you so much for your lovely email. I was just about to message you to tell you how much the children enjoyed today. They were really inspired by both your assembly and workshops and very keen to learn more once you had left.
All of the staff told me how much they enjoyed you talks and how much they learned too. It has been a great start to further work we will do on Islam. I hope that we will be able to get your back to our school again to continue this work.
Joanne Clinch, Deputy Headteacher, St Peter's RC Primary School, Rochdale
What a pleasure it was for all of us here at St James to meet you. Thank you so much for travelling from Bolton and bringing your knowledge of Islam, your insights, your sense of unity and your good humour. The children were clearly entranced by your assembly and the Year 5 & 6 children captivated by their pilgrimage to Mecca and the surrounding area.
Hopefully we will meet again if not here then in the stands at Old Trafford!
Keep up the good work.
Martin Kettle, Deputy Head, St James (Independent) Preparatory School, Earsby Street, London, W14 8SH
Thank you Imran for a great morning at our school. The assembly was very engaging, accessible and appropriate for all the children from Reception to Year 6. The session on artefacts for the Y3/4 children was super and really interactive with all the children being fully immersed in the activity and learning a great deal to add to their knowledge of Islam. The session on what it means to be Muslim in Britain today for the Y5/6 children was also full of fascinating information and the children were discussing lots of things afterwards that they want to find out more about as there was so much new and fascinating information for them (especially as we live in quite a rural area where the children have such limited experience of meeting people from different cultures and religions). The Y1/2 children loved their Q and A session and they were full of "why?" questions to add to their understanding of Islam. All of the staff reported back that they were really impressed by your approach, the way you engaged and involved all the children and made them feel good about their contributions. All of the children, including a few who have significant difficulties with learning and focusing, were really listening and involved with many less confident children answering questions. We will be booking you again, probably for a full day next time so Y5/6 children can go into more depth in their session. Thank you.
Here’s our feedback:
- All children were engaged and remembered a lot about Islam both in assembly and during the workshop.
- interactive assembly- which the children loved
- great use of artefacts to help the children understand
- our Muslim kids loved sharing their knowledge and practices with Imran. They were all very excited.
Vicky Washbrook, RE Lead, Tipton Green Junior School, West Midlands
I was lucky enough to attend a workshop led by Imran at a recent Catholic RE Coordinators’ meeting. I was so enlightened and inspired that we asked him to lead a day session at school during Multi-Faith Week.
Imran led an informative, fun and interactive whole-school assembly. The children and staff gave very positive feedback about the assembly and even children in Reception class were able to draw on similarities between their own faith and Islam.
KS2 children had this to say about the workshops:
It’s the best workshop we have ever had.
Imran was funny and incredible at telling stories.
I liked Imran because he was a United fan.
He really brought the pilgrimage to life in the workshop. I can imagine what it is like to visit Mecca.
It was really interesting learning about different religions.
I liked it because I got to dress up.
He was kind, gentle, interesting and fun!
I would recommend him to any school that aims to promote a greater understanding of Islam and foster better relationships between people of different faith backgrounds.
Deborah Hunt, Deputy Headteacher, St John Fisher RC Primary School, Rochdale.
Imran’s whole school assembly was excellent and informative. He kept all the children engaged throughout the assembly. The workshops were also informative and fun. Imran had a lovely manner with the children and the staff were very impressed. We would highly recommend Imran to all schools.
Alison Hulse, Settle CE Primary School, North Yorkshire
It was an absolute pleasure to have you working with us in school today. Your sessions must make a huge difference for many children and staff and will hopefully impact on many peoples’ understanding of Islam, which can only be for the good of everyone.
Thank you for your time, your thoughtfulness and the very accessible way in which you presented today – I really enjoyed it and had lots of positive feedback from teachers and children.
It would be lovely to work with you again in the future,
With very best wishes
Wendy Nicholas, Headteacher, Beetham CE Primary School
Sincere thanks for your visit to Our Lady's yesterday. Your inputs were thoroughly enjoyed by staff and pupils across the school. The children aged 4 -11 were fully engaged throughout the assembly, eagerly wanting to answer your questions. All gained a great deal from the learning experiences you created and skillfully delivered. Your pitch was great, very informative and appropriate to each age range. You covered a great deal in such a short amount of time. Teaching staff and pupils are excitedly discussing what they learnt and praising what a great experience it was. I would definitely recommend you to colleagues.
Sue Molloy, Headteacher, Our Lady of the Rosary RC Primary School, Manchester
Once again thank you for such and informative and interesting workshop. I really liked the way you encouraged the children to ask questions and think about how easy or difficult it is to be a Muslim in Britain today. The children really enjoyed the session - shown by their many and varied questions. The session did exactly what I wanted it to do as each child left with a greater understanding and knowledge of the practice of Islam in Britain today.
RE Lead, Crosslee Primary School, Manchester
Pupils enjoyed everything, in particular they enjoyed the role play and opportunities to learn in a practical way about the Muslim faith.
Learning about the Arabic language was very interesting and they would love to hear and learn more.
The way pupils were asked questions by Imran, made learning about different things interesting and fun. They also enjoyed learning in a practical authentic way, using ‘real’ objects.Bishop Harvey Goodwin CE Primary School, Carlisle
Thank you for coming to our school on Monday. All the children enjoyed the activities you prepared, from the KS1 children who were in the assembly and learning about the Five Pillars up to the Year 6 class who thoroughly enjoyed finding out more about the lives of those who follow the Islamic tradition. The lessons were appropriate for the different year groups and involved all the members of each class regardless of their ability.
I spoke to the teachers involved and they were all very impressed by the way you interacted with the children and by the way you imparted the information about Islam in a way they would all remember.
We all would like to send a big 'Thank You' to you and hope to be able to contact you again in the future to find out more.Amotherby Primary School, North Yorkshire
"The workshop was fantastic and Imran engaged with the children straight away. He was keen to involve parents in the presentation and spent time talking to them afterwards. He was well prepared with lots of visual resources and the lessons were fully interactive. We would highly recommend this workshop as both staff and children enjoyed the day"
St Michael's CE School, Dalston, Cumbria
Our morning with Imran was fantastic. Imran has a lovely way with the children and is able to put things across very well. The assembly and all of the workshops were interactive, informative and inspirational. The children were completely focused and engaged throughout. Both children and staff learned so much. We certainly would not hesitate to recommend Imran to any school.Kate Shirra, RE Lead, Goodly Dale Primary School, Windermere, Cumbria
it was lovely meeting you too and I'm pleased you enjoyed it, I know the kids really enjoyed it and found it very interesting....which i'm sure you realised because of all the questions they asked. Living up in Cumbria we are very aware that the children don't get the same opportunity to mix with people from other cultures and religions, and this can lead to misconceptions if all they do learn is from the news. We feel it is vitally important that services like yours do continue and help the children gain a much better understanding of the huge social diversity within their own country.
Many thanks for visiting and i hope we have the opportunity to do it again in the future.
Take care and best wishes
Thanks to you also for giving us a super insight into Islam & making it all come alive for our children. It was a real pleasure to meet you & I'm sure that our pupils & staff have benefited so much from the experience. You pitched the sessions just right to engage even our youngest pupils. As we discussed earlier, I think it is essential in small, rural, CE schools such as ours that we are pro-active in our multi-faith work & having you visit as part of our special multi-faith day today has really helped us achieve that.
Head teacher, Old Hutton CE Primary School, Kendal, Cumbria,
Thank you for a wonderful day Imran. The children and staff have learned so much from you. Children have asked for more days like yours and staff have commented on how engaging and informative your sessions and staff meeting were. We have already recommended your workshops to colleagues in other schools and will continue to do so. Thank you once again
Cara Williams, RE Lead, St Joseph's RC Primary School, Upminster
Many thanks for such a great day yesterday. Our children were so motivated and interested in everything you presented to them. They have talked about the workshops all day today and you really brought the Islamic faith to life for them in such a meaningful and memorable way. I know that their knowledge and understanding has been enhanced in a way we could never have done without your help.
We look forward to welcoming you into our school again in the future and we will definitely be recommending you to other schools in our area.
With our grateful thanks and very best wishes.
Deputy Headteacher, Rufford C.E. primary, Ormskirk, West Lancashire.
Thank you so very much for this morning - it was brilliant and the children really enjoyed it. I will send photos of their work when finished.. We have forwarded your details to all schools in the trust.
Thank you again.
I would like to thank you on behalf of the staff and children of Corringham C of E Primary School for visiting us in October. We have received many positive comments from the children and their parents about the lessons you led. Children's understanding of Islam has definitely been enhanced and they found your first hand experiences of the faith to be very engaging. As a teacher I also benefited from your visit and will have more confidence when teaching children about Islam in the future.
Corringham CE Primary School, North Lincolnshire
Thank you so much for coming in today. The children were excited to go home and share their new knowledge and understanding. i will be doing a follow up evaluation with them for my RE portfolio and obviously I'll forward you the feedback. I will certainly spread the word amongst colleagues as it was all such an engaging way to learn and discover. Mr Williams, Mrs Harper and Mr Ayre all reported just what brilliant sessions they had also had.
Thank you again and hopefully we will see you again in school soon.
Deputy Headteacher, St Luke's CE Primary School, Formby
'This morning I was invited into my daughter's school to listen to Imran talk to the children about Islam and the Muslim world. This was delivered to the children in a fun and interesting learning environment through the use of his videos, his knowledge and visual aids. A lovely morning learning and speaking with the children and seeing them work together to help break down prejudices and spread understanding.' Mrs Sollinger - Parent of Year 5 child.
'Today is the second time that Imran has visited our school and what a visit it has been. The children and myself have had a wonderful time hearing all about Islam, in such a fun and engaging way. There was a buzz in the room, with all children enjoying the tasks and learning at the same time!! It was a great day and I am looking forward to the next time when he can come and visit! Thank you. '
Mrs Falsey - Year 5 class teacher, Holy Family RC Primary School, Salford
Imran’s assembly was fun interactive and enjoyable for all the children from Reception to Year 6. The children enjoyed learning all about the Islam Religion, their beliefs and customs. I would highly recommend the assembly to enhance learning about other faiths.St George's CE Primary School, Atherton
Thank you so much for today - it was absolutely fantastic. Children and staff were all very complimentary.
Would definitely be recommending - the five classes you didn't visit today will be studying aspects of Islam at some point over the year so perhaps could arrange something for then for second part of the year.
St Margaret's CE Primary, Oldham
Imran visited our school to conduct a Parental Engagement Workshop ahead of a series KS2 Islam workshops which had been scheduled with the children as part of the RE curriculum.
The Q&A session which he led was open, honest and engaging. Imran was able to alleviate the fears and misconceptions which some of the parents held. No topic was off limits and following on from the workshop, parental feedback was positive and in some cases transformed. Parents were enlightened and able to challenge and reflect on their own misconceptions of the Islamic faith. Many felt empowered to take what they had learnt back to others in the community. The Key Stage 2 pupil workshops went ahead as planned with a hundred percent parental support. I cannot thank Imran enough for supporting us in educating, engaging and enlightening our parent and pupil communities through an agenda of respect and tolerance of all faiths.
The students haven't stopped talking about the workshops. It's opened their eyes. Thank-you
Yarborough Academy, Grimsby.
If you want the children in your school to have an informed understanding about different aspects of Islam then Imran Kotwal is the visitor to invite to your school. I have had the privilege of watching several of Imran’s workshops with primary age children on different aspects of Muslim life and belief. The children really enjoy his interactive approach and there is always opportunity for their questions to be answered. They also appreciate his gentle approach and straightforward explanations about Islam. Imran also talks to teachers and parents in the school if you want to build an informed and balanced view about Islam. He has already worked with both community and church schools in Cumbria, all of whom praise his contribution to teaching and learning about Islam.
I thoroughly recommend him to you. You won’t be disappointed!
Church School Education Consultant for Carlisle diocese.
Imran Kotwal has worked with Westwood Park on a number of occasions. Imran's assemblies and workshops promote British Values of respect and tolerance for all. The pupils really enjoy his visits and are fascinated by the knowledge and insights they gain in to Islam. Imran is willing to tackle 'tricky issues' like extremism and racism with dignity and understanding. He will happily work with pupils, staff and parents. Imran has a good sense of humour which engages children. His work with us is invaluable.
Sara Walker, Head Teacher, Westwood Park Primary, Salford
Thanks again for coming in to all three schools in the Trentside Federation - such great feedback from West Butterwick, St Martin's and Haxey Primary Schools.
Hope your drive back to Bolton was ok.
Have a lovely weekend.
Headteacher, Trentside Federation, North Lincolnshire.
Good morning Imran
I have come in to school this morning and every member of staff that I have seen so far today has told me how much they enjoyed our staff meeting and how interesting it was. They also said how comfortable you made them feel and that they felt they could ask any questions and you wouldn’t think it was a ‘silly’ question.
Deputy Head teacher, Cadishead Primary School
Thanks so much for your email. We've had such positive comments from pupils and we're also touched that our community of parents are so engaged and supportive of our RE curriculum. It was a pleasure to meet you today. Thanks so much for coming to visit Dringhouses! Take care and thanks again,
It was lovely to meet you yesterday.
Thank you so much for visiting our school and educating the children ( and staff) about Islam. Your workshops were really informative and we all learned so much. The feedback from the children and adults has been fantastic and have all praised how sensitivity and honestly you answered the 'tricky' questions that were raised. Hopefully we will have educated a whole community to be able to make links across religions and beliefs.
The photographs are great - thank you- another fantastic resource.
I'll definitely be recommending you to other schools
Heworth Primary School, York
First of all I would like to say thank you on behalf of myself and my colleagues for a fantastic visit on the 26th. I have had some excellent feedback saying how engaged the children were and how amazed they were at how well the children responded to you.
Wilmslow academy, Cheshire
Dear Imran, The feedback from the staff, pupils and parents was that the day spent with you learning about Islam and the beliefs of Muslims was both informative and interesting. Your manner with the children was excellent and allowed them to feel confident to ask some good questions. They will have formed positive attitudes towards a religion that they would not otherwise have encountered in such a personal and direct way because of where they live. They really enjoyed the opportunity and I think they even forgive you for being a Manchester United fan which is high praise indeed!
I will recommend you to colleagues and hope to see you here again in the future. Regards
Dear Imran, I just wanted to say thank you for such an excellent day. The children thoroughly enjoyed your workshops and assembly and the teachers also. All staff commented on how much the learning took on a new level because it was delivered in person by someone who practised Islam and had a knowledge which we don't have. Teachers also mentioned how respectful you were to the children and I hope you received the same respect from our community. I look forward to hopefully working with you in the future. Many thanks again and have a safe journey home.Peace be with you.Kind regards
Deputy Head teacher, Woodlands Primary School, Formby.
The staff and children have all given me very positive feedback from your visit. They all feel they learnt so much, and have a better understanding of Islam. We will certainly pass your details on to other schools in the area.
Yarlside Primary, Barrow
Thank you so much for today the children loved it. We did some more work after lunch and completed the worksheets you left me and also looked online at Mina and some of the other places you talked about. They were amazed at how big tent city was and also how the number of people walking around the Kabah would make it difficult to get near.
Irlam Endowed Primary School.
Hi Imran, Thanks so much for the session today - it was really great and I thought you pitched it really well for them in terms of content and learning style. We had a lovely afternoon continuing the learning and the activities you left. They all remembered the answers you gave them to their questions!
RE Advisor, Salford
Imran, thank you again for yesterday, the children were certainly captivated and really interested in your work and faith. It made us realise that children are so much more tolerant and accepting of cultures and faiths, and hopefully it will lead to a brighter future.
Headteacher, Sacred Heart RC Primary, Thornton-Clevelys
We are delighted to have built this relationship with you and know how much our children enjoyed your visit yesterday.
Headteacher, Marton & District CE Primary
Thanks very much for yesterday, it was a fantastic day. The children enjoyed meeting you and learnt lots from your visit. The workshops were fun, informative and pitched at an appropriate level for the children to access. All the children joined in fully and showed a great interest in the different areas covered.
St James CE Junior School Primary, Barrow
We all really enjoyed the day yesterday and the staff and pupils are still talking about it. KS1 have asked again if they could have you run workshops for them next term so that would be great.
Headteacher, St Herbert's CE Primary, Keswick
You were a very welcome visitor yesterday! Feedback from all around the school was very positive. I'm convinced the impact on the children from the relatively short time they spent with you is huge. As you said very early on in your assembly, people just need to talk to each other (and then the vastness of the common ground shared becomes obvious).
I thought that in the assembly, the children (and staff) immediately warmed to you. You have a very warm and gentle presence. The football reference no doubt helped enormously! The content of the assembly was simple and effective. I'm hoping that the children were making links themselves with our own religious practices as you spoke and explained.
The response from the children was great - so many hands up wanting to contribute.
Headteacher, St Begh's RC Primary, Whitehaven, Cumbria
Thank you Imran. Both the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed your visit. Our head teacher passes on her thanks and said that's she's heard lots and lots of wonderful positive comments from the children about your visit. The oldest children enjoyed the discussion they had with you about overcoming stereotypical images and respecting Muslims and their faith. All the children enjoyed trying on the clothing and experiencing the artefacts. Some members of staff mentioned that they learned a lot about the importance of the five pillars. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to meet you and to be able to ask you questions about Islam.
Great Corby Primary, Carlisle
Thank you so much for a truly excellent day. I know that our children and staff all gained so much from spending time with you today and I will definitely be sharing your details at our next cluster meeting.
I thought your assembly was excellent - you ticked all the boxes that I look out for when I'm observing lessons and people very rarely do that in assemblies! Your workshops were extremely professional and well prepared and the children really loved having the opportunity to ask you questions. I loved the way you highlighted the similarities between our religions and also the way you ensured the children understood that you are just like them (supporting Man U etc).
Participating in Imran's interactive Assembly was a great experience. Imran is a skilled educator of children and adults as demonstrated by the engagement of all who attended his assembly and workshop. The information and questions were pitched exactly right and the children were eager to answer his questions. He showed respect to all his audience; answering questions fully and honestly. The children definitely had an increased knowledge and importantly accurate view of what it is to be a Muslim after Imran's visit to our school.
Mary Kelly, Chair of Governors, Boroughbridge Primary, North Yorkshire
Thank you for a fantastic day! The children, staff, governors and parents learnt a great deal and found the whole experience enlightening. We were particularly pleased with how well you interacted with the children of all ages and made the workshops pertinent to their needs and level of understanding. No doubt we will be contacting you again in the future to visit again, or perhaps to speak with you regarding possible visits for our children beyond our school.
I will certainly be passing on the details and successes of the workshops to fellow Headteachers so I think that you may find yourself being contacted again from Cumbria!
The children are keen to email you their questions which they will do shortly; if you were able to respond to them, they would be very pleased.
Headteacher, Flookburgh CE Primary School, Cumbria
I had been trying to arrange for Imran to come in to our school ever since meeting him on a course, I knew he would be amazing and he definitely did not disappoint.
The whole school assembly was fun, interactive and a great learning experience for all ages of children. The way Imran spoke to the children it was obvious he is an outstanding teacher with great knowledge and humour.
The workshop again was very ‘hands on’ with lots of student participation, the lesson flowed perfectly and the children were hanging on Imran’s every word. He was patient with our questions and very honest, really opening the eyes of the children and giving them a different view point from the negative news they are used to hearing about Muslims.
All children have been talking about our visit and have asked when Imran can come back into school, one boy told his mum he wasn’t sure what to expect but after the visit he said it was the best school visit ever.
Melissa Sykes, RE Co-ordinator – Boroughbridge Primary School
To Imran Kotwal
It was a real pleasure and joy to welcome you to our school today. The planning around the interactive activities was absolutely spot on for our children. The way you brought the Hajj experience to life for them and enabled them to understand in real depth what happens when Muslims makes a pilgrimage to Mecca really engaged both staff and children alike. The story of the three devils very much captured their thoughts and imagination. We have been doing lots of work around British Values and I know that today was massively important in underpinning all that they now know and understand.
RE Coordinator, Aiskew Leeming Bar Primary School.
Dear Imran, We have had our end of week reflection assembly and the information they could relay to me from your workshop was brilliant! Thank you! It was more than worth while and we would love to have you back to do a whole school project if you so please. I'll liaise with staff as to the focus and then contact you.
Principal, Ash Grove Academy, Macclesfield
Dear Imran, Thank you so much for this morning!
The children had a wonderful time and it was so informative. This afternoon a lot of the children have made you Eid cards! Have you got an address for me to post them to you? Or maybe when you are passing you could call here for them?
Hi Imran, Many thanks for your workshop on Friday. All of the children really enjoyed the work that you did for them, and I particularly enjoyed the style of delivery.
My only regret was that the hour went so fast. Next time, I will definitely book the half day workshop.
RE Teacher, Greenmount Primary School, Bury
Dear Imran, I just wanted to thank you on behalf of everyone at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy for such a brilliant and insightful day. You have a lovely way of teaching and engaged with the children in such a way that they responded so well to you.The feedback from all the staff has been extremely positive and as a school we have all learnt so much. I hope you enjoyed and got as much out of the day as we did. Our Foundation class have been busy making cards this afternoon, following their session this morning. Please can you email your address so that I can post them on to you. Likewise, our Head would like the other schools in our Trust to experience your workshops and learn more about Islam.
St Joseph's RC School, Market Harborough.
The teachers have been extremely complimentary! They felt your workshops/assemblies really developed the children's subject knowledge - as well as their own! The children loved the workshops and were keen to write up what they had learned. I'm actually just marking their work now and they show a deep understanding of what you have taught them.
Dear Imran, Thank you so much for your teaching yesterday. The staff and children were inspired and enlightened by your knowledge. I hope that you weren't too exhausted by the end of it! We definitely kept you talking. Many thanks for the beautiful scroll that you left with us. We intend to display for all to see. Keep up the fabulous work that you do.
Head-teacher, St Ursula's Catholic Junior School, London.
I am so glad you came to our school yesterday- staff and children were honestly buzzing about your visit and all that they had heard and learnt, and really appreciated the humour and in-depth knowledge you shared with them.
